The world of sustainability is fast moving and ever-changing. And as of January 2018, Premier offers a new service line – Strategic Sustainable Solutions.

Led by Kimberley Glassford and Ailish Wade, the Strategic Sustainable Solutions team works with clients to create healthier built environments by educating, engaging, and empowering people to make conscious changes in their behaviour. Kimberley and Ailish use their expertise of environmental stewardship, organizational design, and behavioural science to create comprehensive programs that engage people in sustainability initiatives, enhance health & wellbeing, and foster community.

Minimizing our collective environmental footprint, leading healthier, happier lives is not only good for us, but for our planet! More details on Premier’s new Strategic Sustainable Solutions will follow soon, but in the meantime, here are Five Simple Ways to Live More Sustainably this year.

  1. Minimize your consumption.

Remember the 3Rs, Reduce – Reuse – Recycle? There’s been so much emphasis on recycling that people often forget that recycling should be the last resort. What we should really focus on is reducing consumption. Buy less this year. Need inspiration? Check out this documentary on Minimalism.

  1. Use a reusable water bottle.

Ditch single-use plastic water bottles. They’re bad for your health, your wallet, and the environment. Instead, use reusable bottles that are BPA-free or stainless steel. Brands we love: S’well, Nalgene, and Sigg.

  1. Use a reusable coffee cup.

Every year in Canada, 4.9 billion coffee cups are used, wreaking havoc on the environment. Despite advances in technology, a lot of municipalities still aren’t able to recycle coffee cups. With so many reusable coffee cups available as an alternative, there’s no reason to contribute to this waste. Brands we love: KeepCup, JOCO Cup, and Bodum.

  1. Bring your lunch.

While bringing your lunch to work will require a little extra prep time, your future self will thank you. Not only will you eat healthier and save money, you’ll also eliminate the use of single-use takeout containers. Instead of using plastic containers, look for reusable containers that are made of stainless steel or tempered glass. Brands we love: Black+Blum, Pyrex, and MonBento.

  1. Unplug electronics when not in use.

A lot of people don’t realize how much electricity electronics use even when not in use. An easy way to save energy and money is to unplug electronics when you’re done using them. It’s that simple!
