Greetings on this sunny Friday.

We wanted to share that Premier’s work with Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory Orphaned Legacy Well Program on Manitoulin Island was featured in yet another article. You can find the article on pages 86 and 87 at:

We also wanted to share that I completed a presentation about the orphan well program in Wikwemikong on May 8. This meeting generated a lot of interesting discussion and comments from community members. So, we wanted to thank all those individuals who contributed to this presentation and discussion. Then, on May 9, we went out prospecting for lost 1800’s oil wells. You will have to stay tuned, to hear about what we found that day.

The follow-up to this May 8 community presentation will be completed by Chief Duke Peltier of Wiikwemkoong at the Global Petroleum Show in Calgary Alberta. Specifically, Chief Peltier will be part of a panel discussion on economics, environmental, and social matters related to legacy oil and gas wells on First Nations lands. This panel has been set up by Cheryl Cardinal, from the Indigenous Center of Energy. This event will occur on June 14, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm and June 15, 8:00 am – 12:30 pm

Here is the description of the event that Chief Peltier will contribute to, provided by Cheryl:

“Focusing on “Empowering Connections,” this conference will start off with a “Spotlight on Indigenous Leaders” from around the world with various viewpoints on energy development. The speakers will utilize their Indigenous knowledge and focus on sharing their voices surrounding energy and projects that are important to their Indigenous community. Each section of the conference will be a mix of speakers with Indigenous leaders, leaders from energy companies (renewable energy, mining, oil and gas) with foreign and domestic governments. As each panel focuses on one topic, speakers will connect with many of the themes throughout the event. The event is a one-of-a-kind forum, ensuring Indigenous voices are at all tables.”

If you can, you may want to listen in on what Chief Peltier will share about Wiikwemkoong’s experiences to date with the abandonment of legacy oil and gas wells. The other participants in Cheryl’s event will also surely have very interesting contributions.
